Addressing Parental
Fears
I heard once
that the only way to overcome evil is
to address people’s fears.
So let’s address them.
- SMAC'M Director
There are over
500,000 throughout the United States. And those are just the ones who
were CAUGHT, then actually CONVICTED (which is no small feat), served
their time, and were later released. These numbers don’t come close to
the actual number of offenders out there, and we know it. There are
child molesters running around free because they weren’t convicted, or
the police didn’t have enough evidence to file charges in the first
place – or, most commonly, the predators haven’t been caught at all.
And, unless we draw this subject out and deal with it openly, they never
will be.
They will molest children until those children grow up, and then they’ll
molest children from the next generation. And with the ever-increasing
human life span, they could be around to molest a third generation, and
maybe even a fourth.
There are more cases being reported every day, and the
top experts estimate that for every case that is reported, at least two
more go unreported.
So how in the world can we contain this threat and
eliminate it? Doesn’t it all look totally overwhelming?
You’re cringing by now, thinking about looking up
something else up on the Internet; maybe Sports scores or accessories
you can buy for your house. I know, and I understand that, believe me.
But here’s the reality of the situation: We can turn
away, saying, "It’s too horrible to think about."
We have that option because we are adults, and we are in charge of
our own lives.
But little kids don’t have that luxury. They can’t say, "No thanks –
being molested is just too horrible to think about, so I’m not going
to allow it into my life."
…..
Someone has to deal with it, whether it’s us, as citizens, facing
the problem together, to destroy it --- or children, facing it,
alone, in the dark…scared…never knowing when it’s going to happen
again.
It hurts us at SMAC'M tremendously to think about this and deal with
the issue. …But, if someone has to deal with it, we would much
rather that someone be one of us than some helpless little kid.
So what do we do?
We:
-Get
rid of the ones we know about, through conviction and incarceration.
-Prevent
new ones from appearing.
-In
the meantime, make children less vulnerable.
-Help
heal the pain already created by child molesters.

Can I Do?" page

The Threat to
our Children is a physical reality—not an abstract concept.
Therefore, the solution must also be a physical reality – not an
abstract concept.
